Hugo Muller is an international lawyer with over 20 years of experience, working in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and China.

After graduating in business and international corporate law, he began his career in the Amsterdam office of Baker & McKenzie, where he qualified in 1988. Hugo subsequently was offered a position with SJ Berwin, the London City firm, where he worked in the corporate finance department for the next four years. In 1993, Hugo started his own corporate finance boutique, with a view to developing the Asian and in particular the Chinese market. He merged his firm with the law offices of Jan Holthuis in 1997, to form HIL International Lawyers & Advisers.

Hugo has worked in Shanghai since 2000, and is one of the most experienced foreign lawyers in China. Per 1 January 2010 Hugo joined Bonnard Lawson as a partner, where he is responsible for the Shanghai office. Hugo’s focus is on corporate and business law in China and internationally. His experience includes:
As one of the longest serving foreign lawyers in Shanghai, Hugo’s experience allows him to guide clients through the sometimes intractable problems encountered whilst investing in China. He is not only an expert in Chinese laws and regulations, more importantly he knows how these are applied and interpreted, and is able to provide clients with a clear context for decision making.

An element which is often forgotten is the interrelation between China and Hong Kong. Many corporate structures can be based on this relationship to the advantage of foreign investors. Being a foreign registered lawyer in China as well as in Hong Kong, Hugo is well placed to advise in this area, and has assisted numerous clients structuring their businesses through Hong Kong.
